Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights, marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year.
Each year Diwali falls within the months of October or November, with the exact date depending on the lunar calendar. This year the main celebrations will take place on 21 October.
The festival lasts for five days, with each day having symbolic relevance according to myths, legends and beliefs.
India is a vast and diverse country, meaning that Diwali celebrations differ according to region. However, it is an important religious festival for all Hindus, and worship is always a central part of the proceedings.
Food is also a key ingredient in the Diwali festivities, with friends and family joining together to feast on a wide range of vegetarian dishes and desserts. Homes are decorated with colourful lights and Rangoli patterns. It is also a time to wear new clothes and give gifts, especially Indian sweets.
To celebrate Diwali 2006, Patak's and school children from across the UK attempted to break the world record for the largest ever Rangoli pattern. For full details of the prestigious event, click here.
